A grebe with red eyes and a black head and back. In summer plumage the breast and flanks are brown and on its head, large gold coloured ‘horns’ (Tufts). In winter flanks, breast, belly, neck and throat become white. The only grebe to breed in north Europe. Some individuals keep their breeding plumage all year. ⇔ l. 20-22 cm A migratory bird. LA: ≈ The PODICEPS NIGRICOLLIS (Black-necked grebe) has a higher forehead and the beak is pointed a little upwards. In summer it has a black breast but in winter it is difficult to distinguish. The black on the cheeks extends below the eye and is not well separated from the white.
