Tern like bird with striking long tail feathers. Brown body and wings, the head and breast are white with a black cap covering the eyes and a dark beak. The young birds have a completely white body. Lives on the coast and mainly hunt small mammals. ⇔ l. 48-53 cm, of which 15 cm tail length. syn. Long-tailed skua A migratory bird breeding north and wintering in Antarctica. There are several other Skua (Stercorarius). They eat mammals, birds and fish and are known to chase other birds for their prey to steal it. The term jaeger is from the German word for Hunter. Four subspecies live in Europe, all others in Antarctica. LA: Other skua from the north are: ≈ STERCORARIUS PARASITICUS (Arctic jaeger) ≈ STERCORARIUS POMARINUS (Pomarine jaeger) ≈ STERCORARIUS SKUA (Great skua) They all look alike, the larger subspecies lack the long tail feathers.
