Large duck with a black head and neck, red-brown breast band, black stripes on its white back, white flanks and a black belly marking. The front of the wings are white, the rear and tips are black and a green speculum on its wings. The legs are fawn and the beak is red, the ♂ has a knob on the beak and the ♀ has a white marking at the beak base. Nests are in old rabbit holes or tree burrows. Young from several couples is raised as a group. ⇔ l. 55-65 cm Partly migratory lives mainly in coastal areas and in Asia inland.
