A large fowl, the ♂ is black with a blue-green shine on its breast and neck. Brown wings with white markings on its shoulder and tail. A white beak and a small patch of red skin over the eye. The long throat feathers look like a beard. The ♀ is brown-black marked with a red-brown breast and smaller. Prefers mixed forest always including some pine, in mountainous areas. They eat pine needles if other food is scarce. ⇔ l. 60-100 cm syn. Western Capercaillie, Wood Grouse, Heather Cock A resident bird. LA: ≈ The LYRURUS TETRIX (Black grouse) is smaller and the ♂ has white under the tail.
