Light grey bird with a long curved beak. White throat and red wings with black white marked tips. Both sexes are similar but the ♀ is paler. In summer plumage the ♂ has a black throat marking. The young are brown with red black wings and a straighter beak. Lives in the mountains climbing along rocks looking for insects. Also able to find insects between the bricks of old buildings. ⇔ l. 15-17 cm A resident bird descending to lower (warmer) areas in winter. Does not use its tail for support but uses its strong feet and claws. LA: Its bright colours can make it look like a butterfly. PICIDAE (Woodpeckers) and SITTIDAE (Nuthatches) behave the same in forests and live below the timberline.
