A wader with green legs. In summer plumage a dark brown crest, light grey cheeks and a neck with small markings. Dark marked grey-brown wings with a white under surface, white rump and lower back. In winter plumage it becomes whiter in the face and on the breast.  On its head and shoulders, some dark lines and the wings are grey-brown. The beak is a little upward pointing.

Found in marshes and dryer areas looking for bugs or small fish.

These migratory birds are wintering in Africa, South Europe, Asia and Australia.

LA:
≈ The TRINGA GLAREOLA (Wood sandpiper) and  ♀ PHILOMACHUS PUGNAX (Ruff) are similar but smaller.
