A dark brown back and wings, grey-brown head with a white stripe from the eye to the beak base. Bright white breast, belly and rump. The white markings on the dark back are larger in summer plumage. In flight, you see a white body with dark, almost black, wings. Finds an abandoned nest of a thrush or squirrel in a tree to lay its eggs. Looks for food in banks or ditches. ⇔ l. 21-24 cm These migratory birds are wintering in Africa and central Europe. LA: ≈ The TRINGA GLAREOLA (Wood sandpiper) has a lighter coloured undersurface of the wing and the eye stripe is longer.
