Dark thrush, ♂ black with a white breast marking, ♀ brown with light grey breast marking. The belly feathers have white edges giving it a scaled look. The beak is orange-yellow with a black tip. In winter the breast markings fade, sometimes hardly visible. The young lack the breast marking but are speckled instead. Found on sea cliffs, in high mountains and pine forests, and on occasions on sloping terrain. ⇔ l. 24-26 cm The population is divided between mountainous and sea cliff areas. A migratory bird. LA: ≈ The TURDUS MERULA (Blackbird) lacks the white breast marking and is more common.
