Upper surface black brown with white markings, a white band on the rear wing accompanied by an orange ring. Under certain lighting the ♂ gets a blueish glow. The under surface is beige with red, brown, black and white markings. On the front wing a large eye and on the rear wing a small eye.

Found mostly near willow trees. The ♂ can be seen by puddles on forest trails, the ♂ are more often on treetops.

≈ The APATURA ILIA (Lesser Purple Emperor) is a little smaller but has an eye on the rear upper surface. 
≈ The LIMENITIS REDUCTA (Southern White Admiral) has small blue markings at the top without orange.
