The upper surface is orange and yellow with black markings. On the rear wing an orange band with black markings visible from below as well. The under surface has orange and white bands with black lines and dots. Orange face, legs and antennae tips. The caterpillar is black with white dots and hairy brushes. Prefers grass patches. ⇔ wsp. 35-38 mm In the Alps, there is a subspecies with paler colours and the caterpillar has less white. LA: ≈ The EUPHYDRYAS MATURNA (Scarce fritillary) lacks the black dots in the orange band on the rear wing. ≈ De MELITAEA DIDYMA (Spotted fritillary) has more brown in the front wings.
