Orange butterfly, the upper surface of the ♂ is dark orange with dark glowing red-purple edges and a small black stripe on the centre of the front wing. The ♀ is more brown coloured with an orange centre on the front wing. Both sexes have an orange band with black dots along the rear wing edge. The under surface is beige with yellow markings along the edges with white-edged black markings, towards the body more blueish. Prefers moist meadows and slightly sloping fields. ⇔ wsp. 28-32 mm syn. PALAEOCHYRSOPHANUS HIPPOTHOE Some subspecies lack the red-purple glow. LA: The ♀ 'Coppers' are all very similar, the extent of the brown colouring and markings are distinctive.
