A small butterfly, the upper surface ♂ is blue with a wide black edge and white fringe. The upper surface of the ♀ is dark brown with orange markings along the rear wing edge, sometimes on the front wing as well. The under surface is light grey-brown coloured with a wide orange band surrounded by white-edged black eye markings. Pattern and colours are distinctive. Prefers heath type habitats. ⇔ wsp. 20-23 mm syn. PLEBEIUS ARGUS LA: Many of the blue LYCAENIDAE (Gossamer-winged butterflies) are similar and only separated based on pattern and colours. ≈ The PLEBEJUS IDAS (Silver-studded blue) is lighter in colour and has no spore on the front legs, this is difficult to see though.
