Upper surface with black markings in a distinctive pattern. The ♀ is variable, often the front and rear wings differ with the front wings more greyish and the rear wings more orange-brown. The under surface for both sexes is yellow-white with two orange bands and black markings, the front wing has a yellow-white edge and orange centre. Prefers warm dry meadows. ⇔ wsp. 30-40 mm syn. Red-band Fritillary LA: ≈ De EUPHYDRYAS AURINIA (Marsh fritillary) has more orange on the front wings. ≈ The EUPHYDRYAS MATURNA (Scarce fritillary) lacks the black dots in the orange band on the rear wing.
