An orange upper surface, black with a yellow checkered edge along the front wing and 4 black markings in the centre. On the rear wing a black edge with blue markings. The undersurface of the front wing is orange-brown, the rear wing is brown marked. The legs are black. Prefers forest edges and orchards. ⇔ wsp. 50-55 mm syn. Blackleg tortoiseshell LA: ≈ The more common AGLAIS URTICAE (Small tortoiseshell) also has blue markings along the wing front but is brighter in colour. ≈ The NYMPHALIS XANTHOMELAS (Scarce Tortoiseshell) has light brown legs.
