A very large vole with shiny grey to brown fur, colour can vary. Hairy ears and a long short-haired tail. Lives in couples in one burrow with multiple entrances, preferably on steep river banks. Often 'molehills' can be seen next to these entrances. An excellent swimmer, eats water vegetation, grasses and roots. ⇔ hbl. 12-23 cm, tl. 7-16 cm syn. ARVICOLA TERRESTRIS Lives all over Europe excluding Ireland and Spain. LA: ≈ The ARVICOLA SAPIDUS (Southern water vole) can be found in south-west Europe (France, Spain and Portugal) and has a larger tail. ≈ The ARVICOLA SCHERMAN (Montane water vole) is smaller and digs a lot, living in the central European and Spanish mountains No photos available.
