A grey-brown dog-like animal with long legs, in Canada they can be black and in polar areas white. Thick soft winter fur has 2 layers, the under layer is largely shed in summer. A day-active animal that lives solitary or in packs, the pack consisting of a couple with young sometimes from several dens. Hunts in packs to take larger prey. ⇔ hbl. 100-150 cm, sh. 65-80 cm, tl. 30-50 cm syn. Grey wolf The only predecessor to the dog. Can be found on all continents, but in fewer areas.
