A small sturdy deer, the ♂ has short branched horns. In summer red-brown, in winter more grey-brown with a white rump and white chin. Young initially have white markings on the back. Horns are shed every year, older ♂ deer have more branches. In winter groups are formed, in summer the ♀ form groups with the young. ⇔ hbl. 95-140 cm, sh. 60-75 cm, tl. 2-4 cm, horns ♂ max. 25 cm In Asia the related CAPREOLUS PYGARGUS (Siberian roe deer) is present.
