Light coloured fur with black ear tips and a white tail. In summer the fur is grey to red-brown with a light grey belly. In winter it is white except for the ear tips that remain black. Lives in the mountains, in winter in burrows with snow tunnels as protection against the cold. Has thick fur and broad feet to facilitate snow walking. ⇔ hbl. 45-61 cm, tl. 4-8 cm syn. Blue hare, Tundra hare, White hare, Snow hare, Alpine hare, Irish hare Lives in the Alps, the mountains of Scotland and in northern Asia. There are subspecies in Scotland and Ireland. Those in Ireland do not turn completely white in winter. LA: ≈ The LEPUS EUROPAEUS (Brown hare) is larger and lives all over Europe and Asia and does not turn white in winter.
