Long slender hunter with short legs and shiny black, yellowish fur. This effect is caused by the undercoat shining through. The white nose, eyebrows and ear edges are typical. Active at night, often found near water and houses but also in shrub and woodlands. Hunts for rodents and marks its territory by leaving a smelly substance. ⇔ hbl. 28-45 cm, tl. 11-18 cm syn. Black polecat, Forest polecat The MUSTELA PUTORIUS FURO (Ferret) is a domesticated Polecat and typically beige-white coloured. LA: ≈ The MARTES MARTES (Pine marten) and MARTES FOINA (Beech marten) have a white throat marking and lack the white nose. ≈ The MUSTELA LUTREOLA (Russian mink) is clear brown with a white patch around the beak.
