Dark brown bird with a lighter chest, red-orange legs and under the beak. The feathers are contrasting full from red-brown to white striped. Feathers on the belly have more white stripes. ♂ and ♀ are similar however the ♂ has longer spores and is slightly larger. Can be found in bushes near the shore or waterfront. Often heard in the morning or late afternoon. ⇔ l. 40-42 cm syn. Cape francolin Largest spurfowl in southern Africa.
