Grey-brown bear-like creature with a distinctive black mask and small hands. The fur is greyish brown with white ears and a white nose along the black mask. The thick tail is black ringed. It lives alone or in small families in forested areas near water. Likes to swim and climb, eats small creatures as well as fruit, eggs and waste. Very adaptive to change. ⇔ hbl. 60-100 cm, sh. 30-35 cm, tl. 20- 40 cm syn. North American raccoon, Northern raccoon Originally from America and introduced into Germany. The distinctive habit of cleaning food observed in captivity is seldom seen in the wild.
