A rodent with a long thick tail. The fur is unmarked, but colours can vary per individual; red, black, brown or grey. The belly is white and in winter some tufts appear on the ears.

An agile climber, and can even be seen upside down. Normally eats tree seeds and nuts but can eat eggs and small animals. Before winter it makes food stashes.

Hibernates but looks for food every few days.

≈ The SCIURUS CAROLINENSIS (Eastern grey squirrel) originally from America is somewhat larger and missing the ear tufts. Rather difficult to separate.  On the British islands, the red squirrel is almost displaced by the Eastern grey. No photo available.
≈ Despite the large tail, the GLIS GLIS (Siebenschläfer) is clearly a mouse.
