A boar with a grey-brown to black brush-like fur with long surface hairs. The ♂ has large canines visible since they exceed the lips. The young are red-brown striped.

Day and night active, disturbing the ground looking for roots, acorns and turnips. They also eat insects, lizards, birds and mammals. Living in families to form large groups in autumn, up to 50. Older males are solitary.
