Large, plump animal, black-brown fur that differs according to subspecies, some more red or grey. A small tail, large nose and sturdy paws with non-retractable claws. Wanders alone or in pairs through woodlands and mountains. Some bears only eat berries and fruits but most eat insects and mammals and will fish for salmon. They take honey from bees if possible. Young bears are able climbers though as they gain weight it becomes difficult. Bears have excellent hearing and sense of smell, but their eyesight is rather poor. ⇔ hbl. 170-280 cm, sh. 90-110 cm, tl. 5-20 cm Only bear in Europe and hunted extensively for fur and meat. Many subspecies exist including the Grizzly, Kodiac and Syrian brown bear, which are very similar but differing in size and weight.
