Very small mustelid with a red-brown back and white belly, the colour separation is ragged. In the north, they become white or white marked in winter. Hunts in twilight and at night for mice, following them into the burrow. Its habitat includes many hiding places between wood piles or tree roots. It can use mole burrows. ⇔ hbl. 18-21 cm, tl. 5-7 cm Smallest predator around. LA: ≈ The MUSTELA ERMINEA (Stoat) which is larger with black-tipped tail and has a straighter line separation between the brown and white.
