A large rodent with yellow-brown to black fur and a large flattened scaled tail. Some webbing on the rear toes. The orange front teeth never stop growing. Beavers gnaw mainly on willow and aspen which they seem to prefer. The trees are also used for building their burrows and dams. The burrow has a submerged entrance but the living space is above water level. The purpose of the dam is to make sure the entrances stay submerged. ⇔ hbl. 75-90 cm, tl. 28-38 cm Largest rodent in Europe and, after the HYDROCHOERUS HYDROCHAERIS (Capybara) from South America, in the world. Their dams and burrows are specialist constructions built mainly by instinct, however, the young beavers stay 2 years to learn the trade. LA: ≈ The CASTOR CANADENSIS (North American beaver) is best differentiated by its location. No pictures available. ≈ The MYOCASTOR COYPUS (Coypu) is much smaller with a round tail.
