Black round body with short legs ending in large outward-pointing pinkish digging hands. The eyes and ears are small and hidden in the facial hair. A long nose with brushy hairs. The hairs of the body lay in all directions enabling it to move both ways in the burrow. It has poor eyesight and mostly uses its nose and nose hairs to detect food. It lives below the surface, digging burrows and tunnels. The surplus soil is left as visible piles on fields. It eats worms and insects and it has to eat every few hours. It makes food stashes of worms for this, the worms are tied to each other to prevent escaping, if left alone for a prolonged period they will escape. ⇔ hbl. 11-16 cm, tl. 2-4 cm LA: In southern Europe, there are several species of the genus TALPA that all resemble each other.
