White wading bird with an upward curved beak. A black head and neck with 3 black marks on each upper wing. The curved beak is used for sifting through the mud for food. In flight, the legs are extended behind. Breeds in colonies and live near both brackish and salt water. ⇔ l. 42-45 cm LA: ≈ The HIMANTOPUS HIMANTOPUS (Black-winged stilt) is smaller and more slender with long legs and a straight beak.
