A snake-like lizard without legs and a thin head. The back is brown and rarely marked, the ♀ often have dark vertical stripes. The belly is dark grey to black. Just like a snake, it extends its tongue frequently. Like other lizards, it is rigid in its motion, has movable eyelids, has to open its mouth to extend its tongue and can drop its tail if endangered. Shy and harmless and active at dawn. ⇔ l. 40-50 cm syn. Blindworm Sometimes mistaken for a snake and therefore killed.
