Brown or green-grey toad with a white-yellow stripe on its back and head. On both sides markings and warts that can be red or yellow. The belly is lighter coloured with some dark markings. A blunt head with small eyes and yellow-green iris. Short hind legs enabling it to run fast but it is not a good jumper. The ♂ has a blue throat with a vocal sac. Prefers open terrain with sand so it can dig in. Active at dawn and night, sunbathing during the daytime. When threatened it blows itself up to appear larger and excretes poison, this can cause skin irritation to humans, so do not handle! ⇔ l. 4-8 cm syn. EPIDALEA CALAMITA LA: ≈ The BUFO BUFO (Common toad) has copper coloured eyes and no back stripe and it will be larger.
