Small newt with a brown to green back, sometimes marked. The tail is a little darker marked and the flanks are lighter in colour. The belly and throat are orange pink and unmarked. In their water stage, the colours are lighter and some crests form on the back and tail. The ♂ develops black toe webbing, the tail becomes orange with a high crest, the undersurface of the tail is blue and a long tail thread appears. This thread is small and discreet for the ♀. In the land stage, the skin is dryer without the crests or webbing. After hibernation the water stage starts for mating and egg laying, the land stage follows until it is time to hibernate again. ⇔ l. 8-9 cm syn. TRITURUS HELVETICUS
