A large frog with a smooth green to black back, orange eyes and a white to orange belly. The eardrum behind the ears is twice the size of the eye for the ♂ and as large as the eye for the ♀. No skin folds on the back but they traverse from the eye to the front legs. Always near water hunting insects, small creatures, lizards or even small mammals and birds. It croaks very loudly, sounding like a cow especially in mating season to lure ♀. ⇔ l. 9-15 cm syn. RANA CATESBEIANA Winters below a rock or tree trunk near water. The rear legs are considered a delicacy and for this purpose introduced into Europe around 1975.
