A slender lizard with a flat body, long thin tail and slim toes. There is much variation in colour and markings. Red-brown, grey or sometimes black with bronze and green. On its back some rows of markings. The flanks can be blue, green or white marked. The belly is white to red. It lives in dry areas between rocks, old buildings or walls with sufficient cracks to hide in. An able climber which likes to sunbathe. Eats flies, larvae and other small creatures, sometimes plants and fruit. ⇔ l. 15-20 cm including 2/3 tail length. syn. LACERTA MURALIS LA: ≈ LACERTA AGILIS (Sand lizard) and ZOOTOCA VIVIPARA (Viviparous lizard) rarely climb and prefer sandy habitats. ≈ PODARCIS VAUCHERI (Andalusian wall lizard) is a little smaller and present on the Iberian peninsula and in Northern Africa.
