Brown marked frog with a dark brown line starting from the nose, over the eyes and cheeks, and down to the front leg. There are many variations in colour and markings, the ♀ is often more red-brown. A light coloured belly, striped legs and slightly thickened back stripes. The eardrum is ¾ the eye size. In mating season the flanks of the ♀ turn yellow with red markings, the ♂ becomes grey-blue, but not as blue as the Moor frog. The ♂ sounds like grunting. ⇔ l. 7-10 cm LA: ≈ Very similar to the RANA ARVALIS (Moor frog) whose nose is more pointed. ≈ The RANA DALMATINA (Agile frog) has a triangularly shaped eardrum of approx. the eye size.
