Large grey black predatory bird with long legs, long tail feathers and a red face. The raw red skin around the black eyes. The only bird of prey with long legs, used for trampling on the prey. It eats the prey whole. Due to its size flying is difficult and mostly used for escaping predators. ⇔ l. 90-130 cm The head feathers look similar to the feather pencils secretaries used to stick behind their ear, hence the name. The black legs and long tail give this bird a dignified appearance. The national bird of Sudan.
