The ♂ has a chin pocket with long hairs like a beard and antlers that can become 2 meters wide. The antlers start dendritic and become palmate with age. (Palmate is with plates between the branches) In summer they are solitary then form small groups in winter. They eat plants and young twigs of trees, leaves and bark. An able swimmer and in summer regularly searches for water plants. ⇔ hbl. 200-290 cm, sh. 180-220 cm, tl. 7-10 cm Moulting is in spring. The antlers shed in winter and grow back in spring. In autumn the antler skin is scraped off so it looks at its best in mating season. The largest deer in the world and used to be a low-cost horse replacement.
