A dark elegant marsh bird with a long curved beak. Neck and dark brown body, black wings, shiny green wing feathers which turn black in summer. In winter, plumage colours have faded and head and neck are white speckled. The young are speckled too.

Sifts the mud with its long beak and a stretched neck, to find prey and flies. Breeds and roosts in colonies. 

⇔ l. 55-65 cm

Partly migratory breeding in south Europe and wintering in central Africa. Sometimes they reside in south Europe.
