Shiny blue-green back and head, white stripe from eye to neck, dark wings. The ♀ has a copper-orange belly and a somewhat longer beak. The ♂ has a blue-purple throat, green-blue belly and grey tail. Due to the larger beak the ♀chooses larger flowers. ♂ is dominant and defends its flowers fiercely towards other hummingbirds. ⇔ l. 10-11 cm
