An awkward butterfly with translucent red-brown edged wings. A sturdy hairy body with green-brown back with a wide red-brown ring. The tail end has white and black brushes. Like the Hummingbird the hawk-moth flies from flower to flower using its long tongue to gather honey. ⇔ wsp. 40-47 mm LA: ≈ The MACROGLOSSUM STELLATARUM (Hummingbird hawk-moth) lacks the red-brown ring and the wings are not translucent.
