The upper surface is yellow to orange with brown markings. On the rear wing-edge are 4 or 5 dots characteristic of the species. On the under surface these dots are orange, the under surface colours are white-yellow-orange with dark lines. Likes to sunbathe on the ground and prefers drier areas. ⇔ wsp. 33-40 mm LA: ≈ The MELITAEA DEIONE (Provençal fritillary) and the MELITAEA ATHALIA (Heath fritillary) lack the dots at the rear edge and have more white along the upper rear edge.
