Orange upper surface with dark markings in thin lines and a bright white ragged edge. The under surface is white with a dark pattern and orange dots and bands surrounded by black. In the orange band are black dots.

Prefers warmer climates such as Spain, south of France and northern Africa.

The Fritillary are all very similar and can be separated only by pattern and colours. 
≈ The MELITAEA CINXIA (Glanville fritillary) is lighter with black dots on the rear wing. 
≈ The MELITAEA ATHALIA (Heath fritillary) has darker markings especially close to the body.
