Bold black head and neck. Long curved black beak. The legs and tail are black, the wings are white with a black rear edge. While breeding a purple glow on the black feathers appears and some yellow on the flanks. Lives and breeds in colonies, fly in V-shaped groups in and out of the colonies to feed on grass patches along waterfronts and also small creatures. ⇔ l. 65-90 cm Famous in Egyptian legends whence it derived its name.
