With yellow-white wings, it looks like a butterfly and has very long club-shaped antennae. The front wings are long and thin and the rear wings are more triangular shaped, the wingtips are translucent with visible veins. The black head is hairy and the black legs have a yellow joint. The ♂ has 2 small extrusions at its end. It feeds on other insects and lives in southern Europe. Active in spring. ⇔ l. 25-30 mm, wsp. 45-50 mm syn. LIBELLOIDES COCCAJUS, Owl fly This is not a dragonfly or butterfly! There are more Owlfly members differing in shape, markings and colour and some are native to Europe. LA: ≈ Larvae resemble the larvae of the MYRMELEON FORMICARIUS (Ant lion). ≈ The LIBELLOIDES LONGICORNIS is more translucent and has its wings on top of each other when resting and it is active in summer.
