Large sturdy brown hoverfly. Thick haired head and body. The rear body with less hair and yellow-brown in colour, at the front of the rear body there are yellow-orange triangles, sometimes so dark it can appear to be completely black.

As with most hoverflies, the ♀ has separated eyes while the eyes of the ♂ meet at the top of the head. Very common and found in lowland, highland, forest, parks and fields, mostly on flowers.

⇔ l. 15-19 mm

It cannot sting.

LA:
≈ The APIS MELLIFERA (Honey bee) looks very similar but can not hover.
