Large black yellow hoverfly with yellow black vertical stripes on its body and black grey cross stripes on the rear body in a distinctive pattern. The legs are yellow black and its head has a vertical black line. Often found near water and swamps. ⇔ l. 12-14 mm syn. MUSCA TRELINEATA, HELOPHILUS SIMILIS LA: ≈ The HELOPHILUS TRIVITTATUS (Large tiger hoverfly) is lighter in colour lacking the head stripe and with different markings on its rear. ≈ The PARHELOPHILUS VERSICOLOR is smaller with more hair and more orange-yellow coloured.
