A sturdy yellow black hoverfly with specific markings on its body resembling a skull. The rear is yellow with black markings. Food is honeydew and pollen and the hoverfly is often seen on flowers. Larvae are found in still water living off rotting plants. ⇔ l. 11-15 mm
