A delicate fly with black-marked wings. The rear section is brown black and yellow ringed and for the ♂ ends in a red plier-shaped scorpion-like tail that is held upwards. Its snout is red and long like a bird beak. Larvae live in rotting wood and adults in bushes and flowers. ⇔ l. 14-15 mm syn. Common scorpionfly Its plier shaped tail is used for reproduction, not for pinching. LA: Worldwide there are many PANORPIDAE (Scorpionflies) and all ♂ have the distinctive tail.
