Black beetle with orange-red pointed shield and a distinctive black marking. The ♀ has a longer rear section and shorter antennae than the ♂. Otherwise, they look the same. Larvae can be found on dead wood, adults on flowers. ⇔ l. 14-20 mm syn. BRACHYLEPTURA CORDIGERA LA: ≈ The PYROCHROA COCCINEA (Cardinal beetle) has a bright red straight shield and lacks the marking.
