Broad, flat-bodied dragonfly, dark coloured wingbase, like leaded windows, with yellow veins. Rear body is wide and flat, ♂ is blue and the ♀ is brown yellow. Both have yellow markings at the side of the rear section. Young ♂ and ♀ are yellow-orange. Older ♀ becomes browner with a blue glaze. The gender difference is identifiable by the rear body, the ♀ has separated cerci (little appendix at the end) and the ♂ has the cerci close to each other. ⇔ l. 39-48 mm, wsp. 65-70 mm LA: ≈ The LIBELLULA QUADRIMACULATA (Four-spotted chaser) has two spots on each wing edge and the rear has a black tip. ≈ The ORTHETRUM CANCELLATUM (Black-tailed skimmer) has 2 vertical stripes. ≈ The LIBELLULA FULVA (Scarce chaser) has more yellow coloured veins and one black vertical stripe on its yellow back.
