Oval shaped water beetle with a flat yellow-brown shield with black stripes. The legs are yellow-brown with darker coloured, stronger and flattened rear legs. The ♀ has 4 vertical grooves on her shield and the ♂ has a smooth shield. The ♂ also has sucking toes to attach to the female while mating. It is an able swimmer but can fly as well. ⇔ l. 16-18 mm LA: Various predaceous diving beetles are difficult to separate. ≈ The DYTISCUS MARGINALIS (Great diving beetle) is larger and with a yellow edge around its shield.
